1. Is it difficult to find time to meditate?

With this technique, you can also meditate for five minutes. The important factor is to enter into Mental Silence. Remaining in that state five or thirty minutes will not make much difference in the relaxation effect. So please make it a habit, when you do not have time, to just sit five minutes anywhere and enter Mental Silence. Skip the breathing exercises of Hatha Yoga.  This is much better than not doing it at all. This way you will also avoid getting out of your routine of two sessions per day. You can also increase the sessions of five minutes during your day to mitigate any build up of stress.  And five minutes now and then is easy to find.




2. Is noise disturbing?

We should distinguish several kinds of noises: noise in the environment, which we cannot control, and noise intentionally caused by someone and on which we can have some influence.

We can also distinguish external noise in the environment, and internal noise in the body.

An environmental noise can be a car passing by over which we have no influence. Curiously, this noise bothers us less than the intentional noise of someone talking to us.

An example of internal noise can be the beats of your heart.

The solution is to treat all forms of disturbance the same way. We must put all disturbances at the same level; give them the same value, i.e., none. They should be trivialized. In fact, it is never more than an interpretation of brain waves. The sounds are encoded by the ear and decoded by the brain. We are the ones who attribute a positive or negative quality to them. Your spouse snoring will probably disturb you more than the truck passing by, but the noise might be about the same!

Therefore we should trivialize these disturbances, whether it is a train, a car, a thought, and/or a physical sensation. Whatever disturbs us, we proceed in the same way. We return to the focus and ultimately nothing bothers us any longer.

It is not useful to fight noise. Some people plug their ears, put a helmet on their head, put signs on the door: ‘Silence I am meditating’. They will always have something bothering them.

I have an interesting personal story to tell in relation to that. I was, when I started meditating, attending a meditation seminar in Spain. The organizers planned the meditation room in the basement, right under the kitchen of the hotel. The cooks were preparing the meals when we were meditating! You can imagine the noise made by the big pots clashing! I was going crazy. What bothered me most is that among the twenty to thirty people present, I was the only one to be annoyed. The other participants did not appear to be disturbed.

I first tried to obtain silence by putting a sign on the entrance door asking to close the door between the kitchen and the cellar where we meditating. Nobody cared. I then tried to seal the door of communication with a mattress. Useless. This fight lasted for two days, to the point I was going to leave. But I had come with some friends and I had the car. Either I was going away and leave my friends, and that would not have been very nice, or I was staying and had to tolerate the noise. I decided to stay and bear with it.

From that moment on, this loud noise, which was before unbearable, did not bother me any more. That day, I had a great lesson. Since then, I just integrate any type of disturbance to the mental carousel. They are only brain waves and disturb us only if we give them a negative connotation.

So, we should not fight noise. We should integrate the noise in our mental carousel and treat it as any other disturbance.




3. Is this technique good for everyone?

The Mental Silence technique as explained in this book was taught to more than 2,500 people from all origins, cultures, ages, social levels, education, race, and from both sexes. The youngest was a boy of 5 and the eldest, a woman of 85. This technique is based on three laws of functioning of the mind as explained in chapter 4. These laws are universal. Therefor it is efficient for everyone who understands the process.




4. What is the medical indication of this technique?

It can be used therapeutically to prevent and treat any dysfunction due to stress, or in any physical or mental disease, to facilitate recovery and enhance the effects of other treatments.




5. Can mental patients practice meditation?

Mental patients have to be diagnosed first. Mental Silence meditation can be used in a lot of pathologies with good results. It is interesting to know that, even in serious mental diseases it can be practiced and can be a help to stabilize mental condition.




6. Isn’t the mind and consciousness the same?

In Indian philosophy, it is clearly stated that the mind and consciousness are different. The mind is an instrument of consciousness.

Consciousness can be called a sixth element. Individual consciousness is linked to universal consciousness.

Besides experiencing it ourselves in meditation, two facts seem to confirm this theory:

Lately a Japanese team could transmit orders by thought to a robot. They recorded the electrical patterns of the brain on the subject who was giving the orders, and transmitted them to the robot, which was obeying. Making coffee, bringing the cup, etc. It shows that thoughts are quite material.

Secondly, one of my bipolar patients testified that his experience of  was the same if he was in a pathological manic phase or normal. This shows that consciousness is not affected by mental disease, and that mental diseases and dysfunctions are occurring at the level of the mind.



7. It reminds me of an experience I had when I was a child?

Mental Silence is a natural state of consciousness. It can happen naturally and spontaneously with kids, or with people in close relation with nature (a shepherd in the mountains for example). When the environment is calm and you just let go, you might enter  Mental Silence without any technique. But the advantage of having a technique is that you can experience Mental Silence almost anywhere, any time, and as often as you wish.




8. Is it necessary to meditate regularly?

From one session to another, you will build up and stabilize the effects of meditation. You have probably noticed that, after a session, the effects last for a moment and then fade away. This time is shorter when we are in a stressed environment. Repetition will lengthen this time and with frequent sessions the effects will last for the whole day.

If you meditate regularly for one month for example, you will make good progress. If you stop then completely, you will loose what you gained after some time.

When a depressive patient comes back after two years or more, the first question I ask is: ‘When did you stop meditating?’ The answer is always three to six months or more.  I have never seen a patient come back who continued having two sessions of meditation per day.

The therapeutic effect of  Mental Silence is efficient, for cure and prevention of anxiety and depression.




9. What is it that brings you out of Mental Silence?

There is a natural tendency to spontaneously merge out of Mental Silence after about 20 minutes. You can then prolonge the session if desired. In case you are afraid to remain stuck into Mental Silence for a long time in case you have a limited amount of time available, you can set up a light alarm beep at 30 minutes to be sure that you don't "miss the train"




10. Is Mental Silence meditation boring after some time?

Life is a stream that flows in one direction and you can never dip your toes in the same water. Similarly, your environment and yourself are different every day. The configuration of objects in the foreground and background awareness fields is never the same, and the mental carousel is always different. The technique itself being very simple, you never get bored. It is a guarantee for a long-term practice.



11. Should we have long sessions of meditation to obtain results?

When you want to dye a cloth the traditional way, you dip it into the dye and then lay in the sun so that the dye binds. It does no good to soak it for a long time. It is the alternation of soaking in the tub and lying in the sun that gives the best result.

Similarly, the therapeutic effect of Mental Silence is qualitative and not quantitative. If you just have a short moment of Mental Silence  in your meditation, you will have about the same therapeutic effect as if you stay for a long time. It is the alternation of Mental Silence and activity that will give the best results.

We are part of this world and should integrate meditation into our active life.



12. Can we have two thoughts at the same time?

Attention moves to the speed of light. It seems therefore that we can have several objects focused at the same time in our awareness field. This is just an impression. If we analyse carefully what happens, at a given instant, we will realize that there is only one object focused at a time.

Similarly, if you take a stack of sheets of paper and with a needle pierce them with a fast jab, it may seem that you cross all the sheets at once. But if you analyse the motion closely, the needle pierces them one by one.



13. Is the experience of Mental Silence imaginary?

The mind stores billions of inherited and acquired data. With that available information, we can imagine whatever we want. But when we meditate, we should not be trapped in an imaginary world. This happens if the technique of meditation is too active (concentration, visualisation, observation, etc.). Therefore, with Mental Silence meditation we first switch off the mind.

Meditative experiences are direct experiences. Although subjective, they can be objectified with precise criteria, and are comparable from one session to another, and from one individual to another. But you have to experience it yourself to be convinced that they are real, as real as I can see my dog now.

The meditation technique should not trap you in your mind, as most techniques do. Mental Silence meditation first switches off the mind. It is the basic condition to go further.



14. I can’t concentrate long on the focus!

This is the main problem many people have. They say they cannot concentrate. Concentration is a mental activity; and mental activity is maintained by the concentration process itself. This way the activity of the mind cannot stop easily. So, don’t concentrate. Just displace your attention without effort, from any object, to the focus. Also, don’t try to stay on the focus. This is useless. The focus is an object, it is not Mental Silence, and the focus also disappears when we enter Mental Silence.



15. I am constantly ruminating thoughts!

If you are ruminating thoughts and you put your attention on them, it's clear that your anxiety level will increase and you become nervous. Conversely, if you decide to turn your attention to another object, a calm object, calm will increase. So, systematically come back to the focus.



16. Is the focus Mental Silence?

No, you are not in Mental Silence when you are on the focus. Either you are on a focus in the foreground with the other objects, blurred, in the background. Or you are on one these objects, which comes from the background to the foreground. You cannot be on both at the same time.

Let us compare the focus to an island in an ocean of thoughts. Either you are in the ocean. Or you are on the island. With this technique, you go from the ocean to the island. Every time you are on the island you have a little rest, your thinking process slows down a bit, you rest, it calms down. Progressively it will be the opposite. And finally you leave both ocean and island and both disappear.

Consciousness remains, peaceful and without activity. This is Mental Silence.



17. I can’t keep my temper when somebody shouts at me!

It is certainly one of the situations that need self-control. Most people will counter-attack when they feel insecure and the atmosphere will degrade rapidly. One can perceive the aggressiveness of the attacking person as a negative wave hitting the solar plexus, the nervous centre at the base of the sternum.  Then this negative energy invades the head and the whole body. The usual reaction is to send this wave back to the aggressing person. This reaction will also attack your health.

There are two ways to avoid starting this war! 

Firstly, you can immediately shift your attention to the Frontal Focus where there are no thoughts and where you will feel safe.

Secondly, you can apply the Tibetan Buddhist technique called ‘Tong-Len’. It consists in first visualizing the negative wave coming to you and instead of resisting and sending it back, letting it go through your body and get lost behind you. This way, your solar plexus will not ‘heat up’. Then, visualize your breath coming in and out of your lungs. When you exhale, you ‘send’ positivity to the aggressing person, and when you inhale, you let negativity go through your body and get lost behind you.

This will rapidly pacify the negativity in the environment and you will avoid stressing your physiology.




18. Can we lose weight with meditation?

Well, yes, Mental Silence will have an indirect effect on weight excess. As you certainly know, many people eat compulsively to fight stress, anxiety or depression. Mental Silence will pacify these negative emotions and the need to compensate them with food will decrease or disappear. It will not really work with people who just like to eat, or have a rich social life.

They may become more conscious though of the damage that an excess of food is causing to their body and decrease for this reason their food intake.



19. Can we treat cancer or serious diseases with meditation?

This is a frequent question and people like to believe in miracles. I would say no. But it can contribute to a medical treatment. An unstressed physiology and a peaceful mind will permit your body to naturally defend itself better. The medical treatment can therefore be more efficient; you may support secondary effects better and have globally a better chance to efficiently fight the disease. We know that all diseases have a mental component that contributes to its development. Pacifying the mind and getting rid of stress will certainly contribute to change the course of the disease.
